feature additions

Post by robinlawrie »

ok so having played with vraypattern for a day now, i think its a super powerful concept, that could be a world beater, if it just had a few more features.

1st for me would be an option to randomly rotate the tiles (increments of 90 degrees obviously) this should help a lot to defeat the visible tiling.

* option to allow overlap between tiles. no idea if this is possible, but again would help reduce tiling when doing things like grass

* mesh degradation / erosion based on distance. a simple option to allow faces to be randomly deleted based on distance from the camera. again, for doing massive areas of grass, you could slap vraypattern on the whole landscape, and it would fade gracefully out towards the horizon. this would help enormously reducing the antialiasing load in the distance, and would also reduce whatever mesh overheads vraypattern actually has.

after that its obvious ones like map control etc, as having to define the boundaries with a mesh edge gives ugly results unless you are very careful. but im guessing this would be very hard to do.

one option might be to control z offset based on distance or a map. .. that way (again talking about grass) the grass would sink gradually below the base mesh as it got further from the camera.

It is interesting ideas, but unfortunately VrayPattern is a texture. It is close to displacement. Most of your ideas beyond of texture possibility.
