Lets say I want to have the objects in vray scatter angle to the flow of my surface topology. Is this possible?

It's not currently possible, but the idea is pretty interesting, we'll think on this.
That's too bad. I have a creature that has such topological flow and I was hoping to cover it with geometry that contoured to this flow. If you ever have this feature please let me know!
You could try using "Pattern" distribution type which use UV for distribution.
If I try using Pattern, in a lot of my tests maya simply crashes. I've never had success with pattern types 1-3.
Could you please send me some scenes that crash?
