It seems that VRayPattern uses a z up coordinate system where Maya uses Y up? Is this the case?
My source mesh sometimes have to be rotated -90 on the x axis for it to appear properly.

This is how it works right now - check the test scene and how objects are oriented. Anyway I'll try to improve this.
